Week 1 Learning Journal - Objectives

In reviewing the course objectives, I can honestly say that the objectives that look familiar to me are the objectives that relate to communication. These look familiar based on my what I learned in my previous position of internal communications and the two project management courses I have completed in my educational career.

When it comes to the course objectives that look either difficult or completely unfamiliar to me, I would have to say the objectives of comparing the relation between leadership and management skills when it comes to project management and the demonstration of how to build, lead, and communicate effectively with teams. I have not really had specific leadership or management experience. I have learned a few things over the years through on-the-job experience and education, but not enough to feel comfortable.

As far as the objectives being crucial to my success and meaning good general background information, my answer is yes to both. I am looking forward to learning more and being able to apply the learning to my current position and future positions. I have been in my current position as a business process analyst for a year after spending the previous 15 years as a communications specialist. While I did do some minor project management in my previous position, it is now one of my core responsibilities in my current position. What I learn in this course will help me be more effective and add more value to my team.

I am looking forward to learning the soft skills necessary for managing projects including leadership, communications, team organization and development, and conflict management. I am also looking forward to gaining the skills for establishing project goals, overcoming performance problems and communicating with stakeholders. As I mentioned above, I believe what I learn in this class will help me be more effective in my job and help my team be more effective as well.
